A year ago we created a limited series of live-sessions featuring interviews with global thought leaders to explore the key concepts of Leadering vs Leadership. Many leaders agree; it’s time to ditch the outdated playbook and radically shift our approach as the structures put in place to reduce risk and drive success in the 20th Century are now often the very things creating vulnerability in the 21st Century. Listen in to learn how there is no sitting on the sidelines any more as we find ourselves in an extraordinary moment in which we get to actually build— not a new normal—but a better next. Leadership is built on yesterday; Leadering confidently and thoughtfully anticipates tomorrow.

Leadering: Why The Playbook Is Dead.

This transformative new era requires a radically different approach to leadership. The tactics put in place to reduce risk, drive success and make us feel safe in the past are now the very things creating vulnerability today. Nancy Giordano provides clarity and urgency around what twenty-first-century stewardship demands as exponential technologies and changing societal expectations converge to shape a better next.
Ditching last century’s industrial playbook—driven relentlessly, and almost exclusively, on growth—allows us to instead focus on building new, more expansive practices committed to human-centric innovation, regenerative solutions, and the creation of long-term value. We don’t need to change what we think as much as how we think to be successful.
In this conversation we speak with Carl Horton, Associate Partner, IBM Enterprise Strategy and Erica Herrera-Betteral, CEO of Belcorp on why the playbook is dead.

Leadering: Contribute (versus Extract)

An emphasis on relentless short-term growth, thoughtless consumption and myopic efficiency have ignored the relationship we have to each other. And there is so much upside business upside to stewarding resources—including time, attention and materials—with greater care.
Economist Kate Raworth agrees; as she puts it, 20th Century business was dominated by one narrow mindset that asked one overriding question: “How much financial value can we extract?” Whereas today, visionary corporate and civic leaders have shifted to ask: “How many benefits can we generate by the way we design things? What else can it give back to the system of which we are a part?”.
Here we explore the shift from CSR thinking to recognizing our Social License to Operate; from Value Extraction to Value Contribution as we better understand it’s not about way we spend the money we make, but HOW we make the money. there is so much upside!
In this conversation we speak with Craig Dubitsky, friendly founder of Hello Products and current Chief Innovation Strategist at Colgate-Palmolive about shifting from Extraction to Contribution.

Leadering: Bold (versus Incremental).
Tuesday Mar 28, 2023
Tuesday Mar 28, 2023
I’ve spoken about our need to rethink Risk — that tactics we believed kept us safe last century are now making us vulnerable. One of those outdated beliefs is the focus on incremental improvement versus taking a (seemingly) audacious leap. we are increasingly being challenged to step up by new benchmarks such as the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and by more holistic replacements for GDP.
Decisions or actions that look audacious at first challenge long standing approaches or technologies and often take a much broader view of ways things are connected. Audacious ideas become much more visible (and are given lift) when we commit to a “Massively Transformative Purpose”, and are able to point our compass toward a shared north star vs simply execute against an increasingly irrelevant list of directions.

Leadering: Wonder (versus Resist).

It has been estimated that 90 percent of the world’s information has been created in just the last two years. Embracing new information with wonder versus resistance opens us up to see the opportunities, advantages, and sometimes even the threats that change makes possible.
As technology is advancing, information is growing, and culture is shifting exponentially, we must be willing to expand our current understandings, approaches, and beliefs. A constantly changing future requires a constantly learning person, team, or organization. Wonder and curiosity are essential for innovation and should be prioritized and incentivized as important. Imagine if rather than reactively responding with “that will never happen” we instead instinctively wondered… “what if”?
In this conversation with Steven Kotler we discuss wonder versus resistance and the fourteen internet size revolutions coming our way in the next decade.
